Two main leak sources have to be differentiated
- The static mechanical connections/fittings of the oil, fuel and hydraulic circuits of the propulsion system.
- The propulsion system dynamic seal, equipments, sumps, which are designed to be drained overboard through shrouds or drain systems.

Any detected spillage of fluid (lubricant, oil, fuel, hydraulic) has to be qualified in accordance with the criteria defined below:
STAINING / DISCOLORATION:
Staining is characterized by a change in appearance, which in most cases originates in the baking of oily or greasy residues on a surface at high temperature.
WETTING / SEEPAGE:
Wetting is characterized by a moist surface around a jointing face or connection without fluid dripping.
LEAK / LEAKAGE:
Leak is the collection of operating fluid into the formation of drop or the expectancy of a drop, that will detach themselves during an engine operating test.

The AMM defines the following correlations applicable for oil, fuel and hydraulic oil:
1 cc/min = 20 drops/min
